Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity Office Location: Blue Spruce Habitat for Humanity is the foothills affiliate for Habitat for Humanity, International. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, Christian, ecumenical, self-help-housing ministry dedicated to building simple, decent homes in partnership with qualified low-income families. Habitat builds and renovates homes, then sells them to qualified families who meet Habitat’s requirements. Homeowner candidates and volunteers work together on building and renovating homes. Qualified homeowners purchase Habitat homes with zero-interest mortgages, and payments are based on 25 percent of the families’ incomes. Mortgage payments are "recycled" to fund additional construction and renovation, thereby making more Habitat homes available every year. Partner families must meet basic requirements to be considered for home ownership. Qualified families are those in need of adequate housing, able to repay their mortgage loans and willing to volunteer 300-500 hours of "sweat equity" labor on Habitat homes. In addition, families must earn between $800 and $2200 per month. Since 1990, 14 Habitat homes have been built in our mountain community. It costs $50,000 to build a Habitat home with financial donations from individuals, churches, synagogues, charitable foundations, civic organizations, businesses, and corporations. Habitat also relies on gifts of building materials from local suppliers. COTH partnered with Blue Spruce Habitat in _____ by providing $___________ and the majority of the volunteers to build two houses. COTH continues to provide monthly financial support to Blue Spruce Habitat and to encourage its members to volunteer on an individual or small group basis. |
